Gwanghwamun Square: A Statue Walk Before or After the Palace

Gwanghwamun Square and Gyeongbokgung Palace are different stops. If you want an easy introduction to the area, start with the square’s statues and decide separately whether to enter the palace. This guide is for the public-square part of your day; our palace article covers a different visit.
Two figures to recognize
Seoul’s official introduction identifies statues of King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-shin in the square and describes exhibitions about them beneath it. Use those names as anchors while listening to YUL. Do not treat an outdoor walk as confirmation that an indoor exhibition is open.
Build a short, flexible walk
- Save a precise meeting point, such as one of the named statues. “At Gwanghwamun” can mean a gate, a station or the broader square.
- Listen to the audio before walking so you can look up while crossing busy areas.
- At each statue, read the nearby interpretation before taking photographs. Compare what the monument emphasizes with what the audio introduces.
- Choose one next stop rather than committing to a chain of attractions. The square can be a useful beginning or end to a palace visit.
Outdoor square or indoor history stop?
If your group wants a short orientation, stay with the statues and streetscape. If someone wants more context, check the current exhibition entrance, opening notices and accessibility before going below ground. If the exhibition is closed, keep the outdoor walk rather than waiting for a service that is not operating.
Before leaving your accommodation
- Check current event or access notices; a civic square can have a different layout during events.
- Choose shoes for walking on hard surfaces and bring a weather-appropriate layer.
- Save the Korean place name 광화문광장 so your map search is specific.
- Leave extra time if combining the square with a timed booking elsewhere.
